Are Smart Meters a Smart Idea?

The Government announced five years ago that everybody will have Smart meters installed by their energy suppliers. The Department for Energy and Climate Change wants to see 47 million meters in 26 million properties by 2020. But are they really a smart idea?

Granted that you can't control what you can't measure and visible evidence of your energy use might mean you use less. It did in our house when got an Owl meter but the only real saving we could make was put less water in your kettle i.e. only boil what you need.

The basic problem is that people who are likely to modify their behaviour, have already done it. The one's that haven't aren't likely to just because they can see their usage. Anybody with a contrary view please get in touch.

Anyhow it's a useful step but things a FEED tariff would be more useful. Oh Yes and somebody should tell the BBC that heat pumps don't generate Electricity. Great idea for hot water/space heating but not electricity.
